KLEWtv New Directions

This report and accompanying presentation was prepared for Glenn Johnson’s Broadcast Management class in the Fall of 2006. After extensive research and interviews with KLEW’s General Manager and staff, our group settled on several “New Directions” for the station to move in. These suggestions ranged from launching a new digital channel, to increasing the amount of content produced for the web, as well as a new promotional and sales campaign. For this project I was responsible for the programming department as well as a significant contribution to the general ideas and strategic direction.

Visual Argumentation Assignment

The Visual Argumentation Assignment was a fun project to complete. By integrating my passion for video, with an interesting conceptual art project, I was able to explore how new multimedia technologies can make a visual argument more persuasive.

Prepared Spaces - The Secret Garden

FA 434 - GardenFor this project I collaborated with Sculpture student Katie Hagara to design a prepared space which explored the concept of a secret. We decided to develop a “secret garden” through the use of my nature recordings and her centerpiece wind chime.

This project consisted of both my field recordings and appropriated sounds from The Free Sound Project.

Biographical Soundscape - Night

FA 434 - NightDesigned as a “self portrait” this project utilized field recording of my apartment in Pullman, WA to construct a representation of the countless hours we spend sleeping. From the typical ambient natural noises to the more specific mechanical sounds of modern living this piece attempted to shed light on the range of sound that occurs as we sleep

Auditory Landscape - Paradise Creek

Paradise Creek

This project was constructed as an abstract sound piece which is representational of Paradise Creek in Pullman, WA. It was designed to bring attention to those things which can be overlooked and through the use of isolation, magnification, and exaggeration, alter the listeners experience of it.

This piece was constructed entirely of field recording gathered during the last week of February 2006 and was created for FA 434 - Sound Design.

Appropriated Sound - The Purpose of a Party

FA 434 - The Purpose of a PartyThis first project of the semester was designed to explore the use of repetition through the patterns and textures of sound. In line with Steve Reich’s It Gonna Rain I choose an interesting piece of audio and attempted to loop it in a compelling and interesting way.

The original sound file was a 1950’s educational film chosen from the Prelinger Archives. This film was designed to teach teenagers how to plan and attend a party, including fun games to play and songs to sing.
